Call to Worship

Wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”

On this first Sunday of Christmas, we, too, have come to worship Jesus the Messiah: the son of David, the son of Abraham.

When the wise men saw the child with Mary his mother, they knelt down, paid him homage, and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

On this first Sunday of Christmas, we offer ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to you, O God.

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all.

Glory to God in the highest heaven!

Opening Song    Joy to the World, 197

Litany

O Holy One, heavenly angels spoke to earthly shepherds and eternity entered time in the child of Bethlehem..

Through the telling of the Christmas story, let our temporal lives be caught up in the eternal in that same child,

(All) that we might join shepherds and all the heavenly host in praising the coming of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Declaration of Faith - The Apostle’s Creed

I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, I believe in Jesus Christ,  God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day, He rose again; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father; and he will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit; the Holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the everlasting life. Amen.

Call to Confession

Hear these words of the Apostle Peter, “Repent, therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord

With humble and trusting hearts, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Assurance of Pardon

The angel said to Joseph, “She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Indeed, he did and still does.

Believe the good news: In Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven

Joys and Concerns

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
